It all started with a piano!
I had a perfectly good piano that had seen too many years – it played well but looked tatty.
I’d thought of getting it repolished – till I got a quote for over £1500!!
So I thought I’d paint it instead – it wasn’t a Steinway or anything so painting wouldn’t devalue it, but would make it fit into my home a lot better.
However, I wasn’t prepared to try painting something as large and complicated as a piano until I was sure that it would work. Everyone I asked said I couldn’t paint over french polish – I’d have to strip the old finish and rub it down and seal it and…. And I was just about to give up when I found an amazing paint
I didn’t have to strip the finish – as long as it was clean and sound that was all I needed. So I found a small walnut cupboard at home that I knew was french polished, bought some paint and wax and got started. And the effect was just what I needed – it covered the old finish well (and didn’t peel off or wrinkle up), dried quickly, and looked amazing when I’d sealed it with the wax. Perfect!
So I painted the piano.
And a table.
And a chair.
And two more chairs.
And a dressing table.
And a sideboard.
And now I had the bug I was going round second-hand shops and flea markets looking for old but quality pieces that needed doing up. Until I had too many pieces for my home, so I thought I’d offer some pieces for sale and here I am!
I have a friend who helps with the painting now, and also delivers pieces locally.
